Dewatering and Ground Control at Bendigo Mine Ltd

    Andrew Campbell

    Presentation details

Tonight’s presentation provides an overview of geotechnical and groundwater issues affecting development of Bendigo Mining Ltd’s operations. The Bendigo field was mined over a period of 100 years and the resulting voids are filled with water to depths of 1400m below surface. Current and future mining will occur in relatively close proximity to these flooded workings before dewatering is completed. The geology of the Bendigo goldfield and history of mining have implications for dewatering and ground control in the current operations. Mining methods and ground support design for the current operations will be described; these include bench stoping, cut & fill stoping and life of mine infrastructure development.

Two Geotechnical Mess-ups at the Gold Coast - What Really Happened?

    Allan McConnell

    Presentation details

Occasionally things go wrong in geotechnical engineering, and it’s not often that we can talk about them openly. Allan’s presentation is about two recent projects that went wrong geotechnically and that were recovered from major set-backs.

Soil Improvement of Soft Soils (Coode Island Silt) by LCM Dry Soil Mixing

    Ernst Friedlaender

    Presentation details

The LCM Dry Soil Mixing system was developed and has been extensively used in Sweden and Scandinavia to improve soft cohesive soils by increasing the insitu shear strength and bearing capacity. Most recently the technique has been taken up throughout the world and was introduced to Australia in 2006.

The system was been used successfully in projects on reclaimed land in Brisbane, for a new rail line built over wetlands in Newcastle and the improvement of Coode Island Silt prior to road construction in Melbourne. The talk will provide an overview of the Lime-Cement dry soil mixing system and its applications illustrated by case studies.

The talk should be of interest to Engineers, Project Managers and Developers bearing in mind the challenges associated with the soft soils prevalent in the Melbourne Docklands and elsewhere.

Dams in Iran Featuring the Sar-Cheshmeh Copper Mine Project

Keith Seddon, Craig Noske, Phillip Soden, Behrooz Ghahreman-Nejad

    Presentation details

Keith will present an overview of the projects that Australian Tailings Consultants (ATC) is currently involved with in Iran, including the Sungun Mine, Miduk Mine and the Sar-Cheshmeh Mine. He will outline the NICCICO and ATC commissions, the drivers for the tailings storage facilities and issues with seismicity in the region.

The main focus of the evening will be a presentation of the geotechnical design issues associated with the Sar-Cheshmeh Mine, including the major tailings retaining structure and the Shur River water storage dam.

Poulos Lecture: Some Reflections on a Geotechnical Life

    Max Ervin

    Presentation details

Max Ervin was the recipient of the AGS “2006 Geotechnical Practitioner of the Year” award. This award recognised input to the profession over some 30 years. Max will reflect on those years, which he says have been kind to him, and have allowed him to work on interesting projects in some 20 countries throughout the world. Max will discuss some of those projects, both large and small, and provide some comment on the changes that he has observed together with some observations of what the future might hold for incoming geotechnical professionals.

Projects/issues which will be discussed will include Road Construction in Bangladesh, Embankments on soft soils/loose sands, Pile construction issues and testing, Melbourne Crown Casino, and Tall buildings.

AGM followed by EH Davis Lecture 2007 Foundations (piles) in Rock–Serviceability Rules and Dinner

    Dr Chris M. Haberfield

    Presentation details

This lecture will challenge the conventional approaches to foundation design in rock. It will provide some insights into the geotechnical issues and performance of foundations in rock and will seek to provide a design approach which considers the whole process from ground investigation through design and construction to in-service performance.
