Failure and near Misses in a Geotechnical Career
John Phillips
John’s talk will cover a range of experiences that he would have preferred not to have had in a 40 year career in geotechnical work. However, there are lessons to be learnt so that younger engineers will make their own mistakes and not repeat these ones.

Design of buried pipes and culverts
Professor Ian Moore
4pm in Room N132, Engineering North, University of Adelaide
Various aspects of buried pipe and culvert design are outlined, and explained in the context of both experiments and design equations.

The Application of the Total Engineering Geology Approach
Fred Baynes
The essential concepts underlying the "total engineering geology approach" will be described e.g. the use of staged investigations, the adoption of a rigorous scientific approach, the role of geo-mapping, the establishment of reference conditions, the development of different types of geo-models, the application of the observational method etc.

Revetment Walls for Unsaturated Clay
Richard Herraman & John Woodburn & Dr William Kaggwa & Chris Ward
Come along and find out how to design a revetment wall for an unsaturated clay in Adelaide. We?ve also worked out the field and laboratory testing needed to provide soil parameters for the design and we?ve come up with some ideas for cheaper construction.

Seminar on seismology & earthquakes
The first part of the seminar will deal with why we get earthquakes in South Australia, probabilistic seismic hazard analysis and the earthquake hazard in the state.
Later speakers will deal with the revised earthquake loading code and various aspects of earthquake engineering including the performance of masonry structures, site amplification and seismic design, pile design for liquefaction, seismic deformation of earth dams and earthquake induced landslides.

YGP Evening: Showcasing young geotechnical professionals and students
Alaa Gabr, Sam Qiu, Reza Sadeghi, Lara Spriggs, Matthew Tervet, Bradley Tiver and Yih Hon Koh
The development of young geotechnical professionals and students is vital to maintaining the present high standard of geological and geotechnical engineering in our region. This meeting embraces the spirit of the AGS which is to promote and enhance the science and practice of geomechanics. The Richard Cavagnaro Award will be given to the best presentation of the evening.

Terzaghi Lecture - Uncertain Geotechnical Truth and Cost-Effective High-Rise Foundation Design
Clyde Baker
The essential requirements for the design of foundations for the world's tallest buildings, from a geotechnical perspective are presented. The basic types of foundation, special in-situ testing, and load testing techniques commonly used, and several key principles to remember including the need for close structural engineering and geotechnical engineer cooperation are discussed.
